Chapter 7

Some six hours later Sam entered her room and stood rigid, fists at her sides, her back to the door. She knew there was an angry argument about to follow her and, sighing deeply, she moved into the room, kicking her sandals off as she went. The white shag rug felt good to her tired feet and she stood still, in the center of the room, curling her toes against the soft fibers. She felt tired and slightly lightheaded. She had eaten very little all day and had had far too much champagne, as she had seemed to acquire an almost unquenchable thirst after that first dance.

The party had been torment for her. Morgan had barely talked to her after that first dance and yet he had managed to give the impression of their being the happy newlyweds as he moved about the room meeting her friends. He had danced with all the women and stood and talked with all the men, occasionally giving her one of his devastating white smiles. But his eyes did not smile and Sam could see the fury glittering in them across the width of the room.

She had not been the one at his side, making the introductions. Carolyn, smiling up at him and hanging onto his arm like a growth, had performed that duty for her, occasionally casting Sam a smug, malicious glance.

Jeff had been her shadow all evening. As she had moved about, forcing herself to talk and laugh with her friends, he had become increasingly more familar, dropping his arm first about her shoulders, then around her waist. Each time he danced with her his hand grew more bold, caressing her exposed back. Sam had told him warningly to stop when he had slid his fingers under the material and along her side. She had given her warning softly, not wanting to draw attention to herself. Jeff had laughed at her and, taking her hand, had drawn her through the french windows into the garden. The garden had been transformed into a make-believe place of moving lights and shadows by the strings of patio lights draped from tree to tree for the party. There were couples dancing on the grass just outside the doors and Jeff kept moving deeper into the garden along the hedge-lined path away from the glow of the lights. He had stopped suddenly and, without a word, pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

Sam stood passive a few moments. Jeff's kiss, as always before, was pleasant, but it struck no response from her.

When she didn't respond, Jeff's lips became more demanding and Sam pulled herself free and walked away from him, deeper into the shadows. She had walked a short distance when she stopped, then, turning quickly, hurried back to Jeff, and in a voice barely controlling her anger, told him she wanted a drink. He didn't argue, thinking her anger directed at him, but followed her quietly into the house.

Sam brought the wineglass to her lips, amazed at the intensity of her feelings.
